Enactment.

In Chekov’s ‘The Lady with the Dog’ he makes a sudden switch from his trademark compact sytax to a series of long, convoluted, breathless sentences. Why? To enact rather than merely comment on the state of his male protaginist. The man is rushing,he’s desperate, anxious, breathless.Chekov wants this new syntax to echo, mimick, mirror, enact that tumultous state. A lovely example of poetic technique in prose.
