John Berryman: The Dream Songs

Racist? Sexist? Culturally insensitive? Maybe. But the first book (forget the rest), 77 Dream Songs, is definitely a tour de force of technique & feeling. Nothing easy in these poems. Nothing Inspirational.

The form is a variation on the sonnet. The content is a blast of news, gossip, minstrel songs, Vaudeville schtick, street slang, academia, travel, monologue, dialogue, multiple voices, desire, desire thwarted, disintegration, alcoholism, irony, pathos, self-loathing & autobiographical shrapnel.
